“Our love will circle round me like a shield to protect against all harm.” ~Melody’s Key
Melody’s Key by Dallas Coryell: 5/5 Stars
“His eyes settled on her…piercing green embers of flame that revealed the ferocity of his pain and passion, yet still shrouded him under veils of ever deepening mystery that made every ounce of her ache to unravel him.” Tegan Lockwood’s dreams were dead, sacrificed on the noble altar of duty before they ever had a chance to live. Her entire existence was disappearing into the abyss of apathy as she labored her days away keeping her family’s struggling business alive. There would be no emotion, no color, no beauty in her life. That is, until a mysterious visitor begins to draw her out of the darkness of her past towards something that will challenge the boundaries of her world, and unlock the most deeply held secrets of her heart.
I decided I would keep this review spoiler free, because everyone needs to experience this amazing book! Anyway, I hope y’all enjoy this review and I really hope y’all pick up this book!
I was asked by Dallas Coryell to review this book honestly and that’s what I plan to do. He was nice enough to send me a PDF. for my kindle in exchange for a review. Now when I went into this book I didn’t know what to expect. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to like this book, because sometimes contemporaries can really just flop. It’s hard to find a contemporary about love that isn’t cheesy and boring, unless of course it’s Nicholas Sparks.
This book completely blew my mind. I fell in love with the writing style from the beginning and it managed to envelope me completely. The writing Dallas uses is some of the best I’ve seen when it comes to a contemporary book. He does an amazing job describing the characters along with the setting. I felt like I was a bystander watching their love unfold just because he managed to capture the moment and describe everything with such vividness.
This book had so much love it made my heart happy. I loved to see the way Tegan and Mason’s love slowly unraveled before my eyes. The uncertainty they shared in the beginning only made me root for them more! The picture painted in my mind of these two people broken, but finding love was just so inspiring and heart-warming.
I don’t know if this is considered a spoiler, so if you’re afraid it might spoil you just skip this paragraph, but I was happy to see that Dallas included some serious topics in this novel. The topics were: suicide, self harm, rape, and abuse. It wasn’t talked about a lot because that wasn’t what the story was all about, but the fact it was in there at all is what really made me fall in love with this book. It made this book feel more real, because it wasn’t just full of love, it dealt with heartbreak and hardships as well. Most people also don’t think about the fact that manipulation in a relationship is considered abuse and I was very glad to see this book address that and how Mason really let Tegan into his world so she could help him heal and vise versa. I may have just took these topics to a deeper level, but that’s how this book managed to touch me.
This book has love and passion, but it’s not an erotic book. I don’t read erotica so I was hoping this book wouldn’t have “too much” and, thankfully for me, it didn’t. I’m not bashing anyone who likes it either…I’m just not a fan of such novels.
The love in this book was so pure and true it was something that can just completely warm my heart and give me this feeling of such happiness. As I mentioned earlier I love Nicholas Sparks books and I haven’t been able to find a contemporary author to match his quality stories, but I think Dallas Coryell did it. His writing style is purely incredible and this story was just beautiful. Also, he has original songs in this novel that are on his YouTube channel! How cool is that? It makes the story that much more real and just sweet.
I felt the characters in this story were really easy to connect with and I was able to feel the emotions they felt. The way everything was written and done was just beautiful and I loved being able to feel so connected with the book and the story it told.
Obviously this book isn’t for everyone, but if you like cute love stories then I recommend this book. I like contemporaries when they’re done right and this one was done right. Also, if you’re a music lover then this book is definitely right for you since you can listen to Dallas’s music while reading the book! I just think that’s so cool and changes the game of reading completely; when you listen to a song that is also in the book. Pure genius.
Now, I guess you could say this book is predictable, but I think most contemporaries are predictable….most books in general are predictable to an extent. I don’t want to say too much on why I think this book could be predictable because I don’t want to spoil it, but if you are really good at predicting books…well then…I say give this book a chance and see if it’s right for you or not. I don’t mind if a book is predictable as long as the story is good.
This review was kind of short but overall I would recommend this book. If you’re a fan of contemporaries and some cute romance then this book should definitely be on your Summer TBR. Y’all better hurry and get it before Summer is over, because this book is perfect!
