DNFing Books

I needed a post that was more bookish related so here it is!

I know a lot of people DNF (Did Not Finish) books, but I’m not one of those people. I can never find it in myself to just not finish a book. I can start a book and get  a decent amount into the book and not like it but I’ll always finish it. Sometimes it takes weeks or maybe even months to finish a book, but I’ll finish it eventually.

Sometimes if I’m reading a book I don’t like I’ll pick up another book that is good to get me back in the reading mood because sometimes reading a bad book can be so exhausting and draining. Also, what I find helps me is that I like to write reviews on books that I don’t enjoy. The reason I like that is because I feel like I always, or more often than not, write reviews on books that I really enjoy or that at least got three stars. Sometimes when I read a bad book I have more to say about it because it’s easier for me to remember the things I don’t like about a book…maybe that’s just me…or maybe that’s because I’m a pessimist.

I guess I should talk about the other side of DNFing a book. I don’t want it to seem like not finishing a book is horrible. I definitely admire those who can just stop reading a book they don’t enjoy without knowing how it ends. I’m too curious that even if I don’t like a book I always have to know how it ends or at least give the book the benefit of the doubt that it’ll maybe have a good ending that makes the book a four-star rating. I know a lot of readers can DNF a book without a problem because they don’t want to waste their time and that definitely makes sense. I’ve had times where I’ve come very close to DNFing a book, but then I’ll usually force myself to read a certain amount of pages a day until I finish it. May not be the best idea but it works for me haha.

Comment below some of your reasons as to why you DNF a book because I would really like to know! 🙂 Maybe I’ll start DNFing books I don’t like…it’s pretty unlikely but it’s a possibility I guess haha. I want to DNF books I don’t like just because I know it’ll save me from reading slumps bad books can cause and because it’ll help me with my goal of reading quality books, but I think my curiosity is just too strong haha.

I hope y’all enjoyed and feel free to comment your thoughts!! ❤ ❤

  1. I’m a lot like you in that I rarely DNF books! I want to get better about it though, because reading bad books always makes me miserable. I’ve started trying to put books down if I’m not feeling them after two chapters, and telling myself I’ll come back to them one day and restart. It lessens some of my guilt for not finishing them.

  2. I’m the same as you.. I think in the last 2-3 years I only DNF one. I didn’t like it at the time but I was skipping so much it wasn’t really reading anymore ;-). Looking back I still don’t regret it so I really should do it again if ever I feel like it. Luckily I don’t read many bad reads because of previous scanning of reviews 🙂
