Working During A Pandemic

Hey, y’all! I figure I would do a post about how this past year was for me. I know things have been wild, huh? It’s very hard to believe that we’ve been going through this for a year now.

Let’s get into it. I have been working this whole time. I was working when Covid started all the way up into now. I’ve seen all the changes as they take place. I’ve had to struggle with the people who don’t want to listen. It’s all been one crazy roller coaster of a year.

If you don’t know or don’t remember I am a flight attendant! I was working when Covid first came to the United States and it wasn’t really talked about. I was on those planes full of passengers when no one wore a mask. I was on the planes with a max of maybe 20 passengers, usually less, when everything and everyone went into lockdown. Stuck in hotels with no where to get food and having my company tell me “pack your own food”. I’ve been on planes currently where masks are not a choice, you must where a mask! You can’t take it off, just pull it down when taking a bite of food or a sip of your drink and then put it back.

My company offered what is known as a leave of absence (LOA) and they offered it by the month as a way to prevent having to furlough anyone. I never took it. I tried to put in for it for one month and I didn’t get it so I just kept working. Well at that time it was the middle of the pandemic so I really wasn’t working much.

It’s crazy to have seen how much things changed. Some flight attendants don’t understand because they took the LOA and so when they came back things were just different. I watched it all unfold. How pre-Covid we would serve meals to first class, we would pour the drinks, we would offer snacks in a basket, we cleaned the plane after each flight, the bathrooms never got cleaned, tray tables were never wiped down, etc. Things are so different now. Don’t get me wrong it’s been a tough year having to deal with the company and the crazy people, but if I’m honest the service part of my job has gotten easier haha. The planes have also gotten cleaner…I hate to break it to y’all but planes were very disgusting pre-Covid.

Have I gotten Covid? At this point I would be surprised if I haven’t had it. I never had Covid symptoms. I have been sick only a few times but it never lasted long and like I said the symptoms were never Covid symptoms…although Covid does seem to have way too many symptoms that are constantly changing for me to keep up with. I haven’t gotten a test so I don’t know if I’ve had it or company is weird about that too, but no need to go into that side of work. I also haven’t worked with anyone who was sick at the time. I mean I’ve worked with people who had Covid, but they weren’t sick with it when we worked together. I have no clue if I’ve had it or not, but I just think it would be surprising to have not gotten it in a career field such as mine.

The thing that scared me most about Covid was that 1.) I was worried about losing my job and 2.) if I did get Covid I would accidentally give it to my grandparents. The latter is what worried me most during all of this. My grandparents, that I live with, have now gotten the vaccine though. I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I were the cause to either of them getting sick.

Work has picked back up though. My flights are pretty full now and flying keeps increasing each month. My airline is also hiring flight attendants again. Do I think everything was handled well? No. I still don’t think it was. That goes for how the airlines handled it and so on. I don’t want to make this post any type of political, including airline politics, so I won’t go into any details about that.

Although, working during a pandemic hasn’t been easy and it’s been beyond thankless, I am very grateful to have my job and my health. I hope all of y’all continue to stay safe out there and that God blesses all of you. ❤ Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed even if it was a bit of a mess. 🙂

  1. Love seeing other people’s stories! I work in an office and my son started shielding early March 2020 so I was lucky enough to be able to work from home. Fast forward 3 weeks and my whole office was working from home and we are still working from home a year later!
