Discussion Post: Classics

I thought the last discussion post was a fun one and I thought maybe another one would be fun too. I loved reading y’all’s comments on the last one so please do comment below so we can discuss some more!

Classics are very popular. Lots of people have to read them for school either high school or college, usually both haha. I wanna know what y’all think about classics. 🙂

I personally think classics are overrated. I wish I loved classics more but I’ve mainly read them for school which takes all the fun out of it. When I had to read them for school it was always on a time crunch and it was always just to make sure I could pass the quiz or test I had over the book. I never read them for fun.

I think one issue I have is that I feel dumb because of it. I think society had made it seem like if you don’t enjoy and understand classics then you’re clearly not as intelligent and that’s not the case. I don’t think that’s how it should be, because that’s pretty messed up. Reading should be something fun that you enjoy and if you love reading classics then that’s awesome but it’s also awesome if you love reading manga, middle-grade, erotica, etc. No one’s intelligence should be determined based on schooling or based on the literature they read most.

I’m trying to get into classics which is it’s on battle. They don’t make sense and honestly it feels like I’m reading a book in a different language. They’re hard for me to understand and I know that has always made me feel like I’m just dumb. It takes practice though because classics are their own breed and like most things you have to keep doing it to get better. So, I would like to keep working at reading classics but they’re not my primary focus.

For example I’m reading Jacob’s Room by Virginia Woolf…which if any of y’all have read Woolf before then you’ll know her writing style, “stream of consciousness”, is pretty jumbled and strange to say the least. I have to read it chapter by chapter and then look up an analysis of the chapter to even know why she says what she says and why things are happening. Sometimes I can pick up on irony or symbolism, but it’s not easy. I mean it comes from a different time and the writing itself is a lot different than what you read in an adult novel published this year….to be fair if Woolf read a book from this year I doubt she would know what’s going on either haha.

I think classics aren’t bad but I definitely think they’re overrated. Have fun with what you read and if you wanna read more classics just take is slow and don’t worry about looking things up! That’s how you learn. 🙂 Maybe you can even learn to enjoy the process as well. 🙂

What are your thoughts on classics? Do you like them? Do you not? Comment below! Comment your favorite classic if you have one! 🙂
